GROUP COUNSELING Groups
are designed to help students build self-confidence, learn social skills and
cope with the changes around them. We meet once a week for a period of 6 to 8
weeks. If your child has been referred to or wants to join a group, I will
send home a permission slip for them to join the group. During the first lesson in each of the
groups, students will learn about confidentiality. Students will learn that confidentiality is
where they cannot leave the group and go tell what was said in the group from
other students or who is in that group.
They can and are welcome to talk about the lesson we learned that day
in group. The following are a list of
small groups and topics. Group Counseling Clubs Banana Splits -
This group is designed to help students deal with the challenge of their
changing family dynamics. This group is for students whose parents have
recently gotten a divorce or is in the process of getting a divorce. This group can also help students that may
have a close relative that have been deployed out of the USA. GOOD GRIEF - A
loss group is a great way to empower students with hope and coping strategies
in dealing with their losses. This grief group will also be a good way to
help students dealing with any types of trauma. Trauma such as illnesses in
the family, losses, or etc. It also
helps to alleviate the isolated feeling when students are grieving. Jumpin’ Jake - By utilizing the principles of learning such as modeling,
role-playing, feedback and transfer students will be taught prosocial
behaviors. Children will be encouraged to “think before they act” and making
the best choices by providing them with new skills, sufficient practice and
reinforcement in their home and school environments. School
Success – Being successful in school and
building a solid academic foundation is important to future success.
Based on the specific needs of the group skill building activities will be
taught, practiced, encouraged, structured, and maintained for children to be
successful. These skills may consist of listening; focusing, being
organized, using time efficiently, knowing how to study, completing homework,
knowing how to take tests, attendance/tardiness, and maintaining a good
attitude are all essential skills for school success. Smooth Moves - New Student Groups assist children with the adjustment of attending
a new school. Students are welcome to talk about feelings they might have
leaving an old school and coming to a new one. It is also an opportunity for
students to meet other new students who might share similar feelings. New
Student Groups usually run for four weeks with reunions throughout the
academic year Getting the Grrr’s out-Feeling angry or mad at times is a natural, normal
part of life. However, to be successful in life we need to learn how to
manage and deal with our angry feelings in an appropriate way.
Activities will focus on exploring anger and learning skills for self-control
and frustration reduction.
