General Information

Southwest Alternative Education Center is a 7th-12th grade consortium school made up of students from McDonald County and Neosho school districts. The program is designed to serve 60 students and is located at 115 West Brook, one block northwest of the square in Neosho . SWAEC is staffed with 6 classroom teachers, one secretary and the Director/Counselor.

Students are offered transportation services.  Driving privileges are granted on an as-needed basis. Students are provided a hot lunch program with a closed campus.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Education Center is to provide students with academic skills necessary to be literate citizens; to provide an avenue for obtaining a high school diploma; and to enhance the job skills and work behaviors necessary to achieve self-fulfillment.

Enrollment Criteria

Students are selected by staff at the Sending School Site and referred to the Director of the Alternative School.  A conference is then arranged with student and parent/guardian to determine enrollment.  High School students have credits earned sent to their Sending   School where they are continued to be carried on the attendance roll.  All diplomas are offered through the Sending School .  Students may continue to participate in any of their after school activities such as dances, ball games, ROTC, etc.

Class Offerings

Classes carried at Southwest Alternative Education Center (SWAEC) typically satisfy one of the four core subjects of Math, Science, English or Social Studies.  Classes in P.E., Health and Fine Arts are also offered.

High School students may also have the option to attend Crowder Vo-Tech for one-half of their school day and take any of the eleven current programs offered there.  Juniors and Seniors  have the option to be in the Marketing/COE program which earns them high school credit while on-the-job.

Credit/Grades

SWAEC is on a block schedule with four classes meeting for 75 minutes each day, every day for 9 weeks.  At the end of that nine week block high school students earn 1/2 credit in each class that they have received 70% or above.  No Credit (NC) is awarded for anything below 70%. Students that receive NC are put on a Probationary Contract and have one 9 week block to bring grades up to passing or be considered for dismissal from the program. Seventh and Eighth grade students are issued grades that are also sent to the Sending School .
